If you are thinking about having a celebrant led ceremony, you’re probably wondering how it works and what to expect…. so here is a typical timeline for Weddings, Vow Renewals & Naming Ceremonies: (funerals work slightly differently)
Initial Consultation: This is essentially a vibe check. We will have a chat where you will tell me what are you looking for in a celebrant and a ceremony. This can be booked via Calendly.
Booking: If you decide to book, then you just let me know an I will send you a booking form and contract. You will then pay a (non refundable) deposit to secure the date. N.B. I only ever do one ceremony per day 💜
Designing your Ceremony: About 4 months before your wedding we will get together (in person if we can, but Zoom also works!) In this meeting we will chat about what you would like you ceremony to include, all your ideas or if you don’t know where to start, then I can offer suggestions. You will tell me your story and I will make lots of notes.
Writing the Ceremony: I will then go ahead and write your ceremony. I use an iterative approach to writing, where I will create a 1st draft and it will be sent to you for sign off. I am pretty good at capturing the essence of a ceremony and a story, but at this point it’s pretty normal for things not to be 100% right and we will continue this process until you are totally happy with content and the details.
Venue Visit: If I haven’t’ been to your venue before I will book a site visit to your venue, this will give me a chance to see the space and further choreograph how things will go on the day. I will also give me a change to get to know the venue staff – which is great in case of any last minute changes.
Rehearsal: This is an optional step, but some couples and families like to rehearse the day as it settles their nerves. This can be done with the cooperation of the venue or if not, over Zoom.
Final Payment: One month before you ceremony we will have your ceremony script and details locked in AND you will balance the balance of my ceremony fee.
The Big Day: I will be there on the big day in plenty of time to set up and then officiate your ceremony.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a celebrant led ceremony and a traditional wedding?
Great question! Unlike traditional ceremonies that follow set scripts and legal requirements, celebrant ceremonies are completely personalised to you. I can include whatever elements you want – personal vows, meaningful readings, symbolic rituals, or unique traditions. The ceremony tells your story and reflects your personality in a way that feels authentically yours.
Are celebrant led ceremonies legally binding?
Not at the moment. Couples usually go and do their legal marriage with the council (usually around £50-£60) and then do their Wedding afterwards with the venue and ceremony of the choice.
How long are celebrant led ceremonies?
Typically 20-30 minutes, but this is completely flexible. Some couples prefer shorter, intimate ceremonies, while others want longer celebrations with multiple readings and rituals. We’ll create the perfect length for your vision.
How much input will we have into creating the ceremony?
As much or as little as you want! Some couples love being involved in every detail, while others prefer to share their story and trust me to create something beautiful. I’ll work with your comfort level and preferences.
Can we include children and/or pets in our ceremony?
Of course! Including family members – furry ones included – can make ceremonies extra special. We can create meaningful roles for children, incorporate family unity rituals, or plan safe ways to include beloved pets.
What are symbolic elements like “Handfasting”?
Symbolic elements add beautiful meaning to ceremonies. Handfasting involves binding your hands together with ribbons or cords (hence “tying the knot!”). Unity candle ceremonies involve lighting a shared candle together. These are available for an additional charge and can be tailored to your preferences.
Do you do Vow Renewals?
Yes! They are different from a wedding as there is nothing legal involved and therefore just pure celebration! They can be a no pressure way to celebrate your long lasting love.
Do I have to write my own vows?
Not at all! Some couples love writing personal vows while others prefer traditional or alternative vows that I can provide. We can also do a mix – perhaps personal promises within a traditional structure. Whatever feels right for you.
Do you work with neurodivergent couples & families?
Yes, in fact this is something I specialise in. I will work with you in a calm, way at your pace, advocating for you the whole way. There is no “normal” over here and I will help you create a ceremony that feels very very YOU! Is a Naming Ceremony like a Christening
Yes it is, except it’s non religious. But it’s also more than that, it can been totally personalised to reflect who are you and what your journey has been in welcoming a new person to your family.
Is there a legal aspect to a Naming Ceremony
No, which gives you complete freedom of choice and flexibility about how you celebrate!
